Philip Catherine – Concert In Capbreton (2010)

FrontCover1Philip Catherine (born 27 October 1942) is a Belgian jazz guitarist.

Philip Catherine was born in London to an English mother and Belgian father and was raised in Brussels. His grandfather played violin in the London Symphony Orchestra. Catherine started on guitar in his teens, and by seventeen he was performing professionally at local venues.

He released his debut album, Stream, in 1972. During the next few years, he studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and with Mick Goodrick and George Russell. In 1976, he and guitarist Larry Coryell recorded and toured as an acoustic duo. The following year he recorded with Charles Mingus, who dubbed him “Young Django”. In the early 1980s, he toured briefly with Benny Goodman. He was in trio with Didier Lockwood and Christian Escoudé, then in a trio with Chet Baker. During the 1990s, he recorded three albums with trumpeter Tom Harrell.

Catherine has also worked with Lou Bennett, Kenny Drew, Dexter Gordon, Stéphane Grappelli, Karin Krog, Paul Kuhn, Sylvain Luc, Michael Mantler, Charlie Mariano, Palle Mikkelborg, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Enrico Rava, Toots Thielemans, and Miroslav Vitous.(wikipedia)

And here a very special live-album:

Four gentlemen, Four soloists, Four essential stories, Four experiences of 30 years of fame. Four solitudes. Their concert at the Double bass Festival of Capbreton France, which has been managed by Iuthier Christian Nogaro since 19 years, will be one to remember. (taken from the original liner notes)

Best Kept Jazz Guitar Secret in the US:
I’m not making this a very exhaustive review, but I think it should be said that Philip Catherine is one of the finest jazz guitarists anywhere, and if my radio-listening experience (granted, it’s limited) is any indication, he’s virtually unknown in the United States, at least compared to the Joe Passes, Pat Methenys, and John Scofields… no offense to any of these guys, they’re fantastic; but Philip Catherine’s name should be in lights as bright as any American jazz guitar star. He is a master of the instrument, and a very emotional player; his playing runs the gamut from soft and tender to swinging and fiery; in his more “up” moments, it’s easy to hear the spirit of Django…

MusiciansPhilip is playing brilliantly on this album, as usual; Enrico Pieranunzi is a wonderfully adventurous pianist, and Joe LaBarbera and Hein Van de Geyn support and interact beautifully; this is a great quartet.

Everyone’s tastes and preferences are different, but if you’re a fan of jazz in general, and jazz guitar in particular, give this album a try. (George Sawyn)

Recorded Live on Aug. 17, 2007 in Capbreton, France

And here is their “Breathing Space” album:

From the first few notes in the air, like those barely visible trails of refined incense smoke held aloft by some unseen hand, I am hooked (Scott Schwenk)

I close my eyes and am transported to another, much more peaceful place where there is harmony and love in abundance. (Toni Blaker)

Indeed, peace and harmony … one of the important things in life.
