With his imposing bear-like build and his honey voice oscillating between strength and sensibility, Solomon Burke (1940-2010) is one of the Soul Legends. If he has never been as popular as the likes of Ray Charles, he remains, nonetheless, one of the most remarkable singers of the genre, the composer of hits as “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love” and “Got To Get You Off My Mind”. After a long period out of the public eye, the Los Angeles preacher did a comeback in 2002 with Don’t Give Up To Me, an album tailor-made by his admirers, from Tom Waits to Brian Wilson. –
